Pastor,A Novel by Ken David Stewart Episode One

Pastor

Episode One

Pastor David Noble shook hands with the young, attractive social worker as she was leaving his humble, cluttered office. He was planning to return to his tattered and torn executive chair when his phone started to ring. The pastor answered the phone while standing up. When he picked up the receiver all he could hear from the other end of the line was loud wailing. David Noble recognized the mournful sounds as coming from his son, Dexter.

Calm down Dexter. Why are you so upset?”

Dexter was able to regain just enough of his composure to answer, “Mom’s dead!”

What!” David managed to stammer as he grabbed onto his desk for support. He was afraid that he was about to faint. His ex -wife, Melissa, had divorced David three years ago. While they had been married David Noble was the well respected pastor of a local church in Fargo, North Dakota.

Picture 51To say that the last three years of his life had been tumultuous was a great understatement. David’s life had quickly begun to unravel. Melissa had exhausted all of her emotional resources by the time their marriage had finally collapsed.

Chapter 166 of The Lake Demon

Chapter One Hundred Sixty-Six:
“I know how you feel. I miss the kids over the summer months when they are with you,” said Susan. “It makes it a difficult situation for both of us.”
“You’ve changed over the last year, John. I can no longer push you around. Don’t take this the wrong way, but the old John I knew was kind of wimpy. You seem surer of yourself, more in charge somehow. I like the new John much better.”
“Thank you. I’ll take that as a compliment. I tend to agree with you. Before this expedition I kind of let people and circumstances walk all over me. I was much too passive. I had goals and dreams but I didn’t have the courage to carry them out. The truth is that I didn’t like the old John very much myself. I was too sensitive, too introspective and full of self -pity. I really didn’t blame you for divorcing me.”
“I don’t want you to give up your sensitive and caring personality John. I just wanted to see you show yourself as strong and capable of handling life,” said Susan.
“I have to admit that my own way of coping was escape, mainly through my writing. When I write I become someone else. The characters in my novels are strong and heroic, the way I would like to be. Also, when I write I can control other people and life and I got addicted to that feeling. I guess that I was living in my own fantasy world,”
“I don’t want you to give up your writing, John. I’ve read some of it. It’s very good. I just want you to spend less time writing and more time with me and the kids,” said Susan.
“I think I could do that,” said John with a hint of a smile crossing his face.
“John, I want us to try again.”Picture 67

Chapter 162 of The Lake Demon

Chapter One Hundred Sixty –Three:
Blake Riley was sitting alone in a chair on the main deck of his ship. There was a refreshing breeze coming off the water and Blake was enjoying watching the beautiful scenery on the shore line. The boat was now passing the forested area of Lake Okanagan.
The natural beauty had put Blake into a thoughtful mood. He was starting to re-evaluate his whole life. He had come to the unsettling conclusion, that up to this point, he had lived his life very selfishly. It dawned on him that he didn’t have any real friends. For most of his life he had only made acquaintances with people that he thought could further his own ambitions. Yes, Blake had an impoverished upbringing. Yes, he had felt unwanted and had been abused by those close to him. He asked himself whether or not this was a good enough reason to turn his back on humanity and to live only for himself. Had his extravagant and hedonistic lifestyle brought him any real, lasting satisfaction? Blake concluded that it had not.
He started to think about the way he had mistreated Jack Kimberly. Now that he had a few days of getting to know Jack Kimberly, he found that he had enjoyed Jack’s company very much. Blake had never really experienced the pleasure of bonding with another human being.
Blake also started to think about Dr. Lionel Phelge. He felt honoured to be in the company of such a renowned academic and scientist. He felt grateful for the mutual respect that Lionel had shown him.
Blake Riley was filled with self –loathing when he caught himself coming up with schemes to get the two live Ogopogos away from the rest of the crew. He had enjoyed working as part of a team and working toward a common goal. Blake had determined that from this day forward he would live his life differently. kelowna 19

My Second Book Has Been Published

My Second Book Has Been Published
As of last weekend I am now an officially self- published Kindle Direct Publishing author. Two of my books, The Wild and Hilarious World of The Roswell Gang and Summer Dreams are both available for sale on Amazon. I was elated for a day or two but now I’m faced with the daunting question, “What do I do now?”
If I was a traditionally published author I probably wouldn’t have to concern myself with how to promote and market my books. As I am a self-published indie author I now have to do all the leg work myself if I want to see a few sales of my books. To be perfectly honest I would be very happy if my two book sold modestly well at the present price of one dollar and twelve cents. The beauty of it is you don’t need a Kindle e-reader to access my books. If you don’t own a kindle reader you can get the Kindle app for PCs and read my books on your computer monitors. There are also Kindle apps available for tablets and smart phones.
Have a great day,

Ken David Stewart’s Greatest Hits (Volume 1, Excerpt 12)

It was about 4 PM when Mike Spangle arrived at his favorite bar. His best friend Matt Dunning was already at a table and waved Mike over. What Mike arrived at Matt’s table he could see that Matt had been reading in auto technician’s textbook.” Studying hard?’ Mike asked his friend.
“Every chance I get,” replied Matt.” “Did you sub today?”
Since he graduated from the faculty of education last May Mike Spangle had been working as a substitute teacher. At this point in his life he was not certain that he wanted a full-time permanent career as a teacher. Mike and Matt have been friends since grade school. They attended the same schools in elementary, junior high and high school. They had always been tight. Their friendship probably started in grade 5 when Matt was being swarmed by a group of bullies. Fortunately for Matt, Mike was just coming around the corner when he heard the ruckus. Mike was considerably larger than most boys his age and had a reputation for being a tough fighter. Mike had never been known to lose a fight. “Do you girls want to make this a fair fight? I’m with Matt.” The bullies look sullen and then sheepishly walked away. This incident started a lifelong bond between Mike and Matt.
“Yeah, I subbed at Blue River Junior High.” Mike answered.
“How was it?” Matt asked.
“I could answer that in two words, “junior high”. They both began to laugh.
“So do you think you’re want to be a teacher all your life?”
“I don’t know. I’ve been giving it a lot of thought lately and I’m still undecided. When I talk with my cooperating teacher during my practicum he tells me he still putting in two hours of homework every night. I mean the guys been teaching for 20 years already. You would figure his workload would slow down.
Mr. James said that it doesn’t. He says that the school district is

always making them learn a new curriculum. The subjects and course material change every year he says. I’m starting to wonder if I’m dedicated enough to devote my whole life to teaching.”
“Yeah I know what you mean,” replied Matt. “I mean I love cars and all that but not sure I want to dedicate my whole life fixing them either. I’m not so sure I’m going to stick with this trade.”
“Well, well my friend, it sounds like were both in the same boat. Remember four-thirty tomorrow at the gym.”
“I’ll be there.” replied Matt.

Revised Edition of The Lake Demon Chapter Ninety-Six

Chapter Ninety-Six
Robert Richard’s was proud of his son for earning a university degree and becoming a certified teacher. John was hired by a school district and taught at both the elementary and junior high levels for several years. John started to dislike his job more with each passing year. He finally became so stressed that he had to take a year’s leave of absence and go on long term disability. After his leave was over John made a decision not to return to full time teaching.
Over the next few years John tried out a series of new jobs attempting to make a career change. He had a succession of jobs including stints as a car salesman and various positions that primarily involved physical labor.
On an occupational level none of these jobs really worked out for John. Realizing that he was still two decades shy of retirement age John signed on with a school division as a substitute teacher. To supplement his meagre income John also worked part time at a group home. Although he didn’t consider this to be an ideal situation, he could live with it as he had found an avocation that he really enjoyed, that being writing fiction novels. John dreamed of one day having a successful self- supporting career as a professional writer.
John knew that his father was very disappointed that his son had for the most part left a respectable career as a teacher. He could not understand his son’s desire for a career as a writer. Robert knew that this was causing problems in John’s marriage and he wished that his son would give it up for the sake of his family if for no other reason. Robert thought that it was highly unlikely that John could ever make a decent living as a writer.
