The Pastor Murder Mystery

Pastor Murder Mystery

Pastor

Episode One

Pastor David Noble shook hands with the young, attractive social worker as she was leaving his humble, cluttered office. He was planning to return to his tattered and torn executive chair when his phone started to ring. The pastor answered the phone while standing up. When he picked up the receiver all he could hear from the other end of the line was loud wailing. David Noble recognized the mournful sounds as coming from his son, Dexter.

“Calm down Dexter. Why are you so upset?”

Dexter was able to regain just enough of his composure to answer, “Mom’s dead!”

“What!” David managed to stammer as he grabbed onto his desk for support. He was afraid that he was about to faint. His ex -wife, Melissa, had divorced David three years ago. While they had been married David Noble was the well- respected pastor of a local church in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

To say that the last three years of his life had been tumultuous was a great understatement. David’s life had quickly begun to unravel. Melissa had exhausted all of her emotional resources by the time their marriage had finally collapsed.

Up until the last year of her marriage, Melissa had never seriously considered leaving her husband. Although her marriage to David was not what she had hoped for it was still a better one than those of most of her friends. After fourteen years of marriage Melissa’s life with David had become intolerable.

Melissa first met David at a popular nightclub in Fargo. She was shocked when David told her that he was a studying theology at a nearby seminary. He didn’t seem to have the DNA of your average Bible College student. David drank alcohol, smoked cigarettes and would occasionally swear. Melissa noticed that David’s vocabulary included the usual profane words, including the f-bomb, but he never took the Lord’s name in vain.

David was the life of the party. His personality exuded youthful exuberance. He was a young man who had ambition and was ready to take on the world. Melissa found that she could not help being attracted to him but she had the uneasy feeling that she was like a fly being drawn into a spider’s web.

Episode Three

Donald Noble reached the chair in his office and dropped into it. The seat was soft and comforting. “Try to calm yourself, son. Where are you now?”

Dexter was sweating profusely and was taking deep breathes. He was sitting in a maroon colored Lazy Boy chair in his mother’s living room.

“I’m at Mom’s place. I was just coming over to pick up her Camry. She was having some problems with her car and asked me to take it into the Toyota dealership to have it checked out. Mom didn’t answer when I knocked on her door. After I’d waited a couple of minutes I opened the door, walked in and called her name. Still no answer. I started checking all the rooms in her house until I came to her bedroom. The door was partly opened and I could see Mom lying against her bed. Her throat was slashed and there was blood all over her tee shirt and jeans. It was horrible, Dad.”

“So what did you do next, son?” David picked up a pencil and started to tap the eraser end against the palm of his left hand.

“I called emergency. They told me that an ambulance and the police would arrive shortly. Then I phoned you.” Dexter started to cry.

“You did everything right, Dex. I’m on my way to your mother’s house.”

David was in a state of shock and was running on automatic pilot. He climbed into his white Ford Taurus and started the frantic drive to Melissa’s house. The pastor still loved his ex-wife and he began to fervently pray that Melissa was not already dead.

As he drove down one of the main thoroughfares, a torrent of random thoughts flooded David’s mind. He thought about the divorce. For the most part David blamed himself for the breakdown of his marriage.

After their first meeting at the nightclub David became very infatuated with Melissa. He couldn’t seem to get her out of his head. He knew that a great deal of what he was feeling for her was lust. He kept thinking of her long, golden hair, her long shapely legs and a smile that could light up the darkest room. David was head over heels in love. The drive to her house usually took about half an hour depending on the time of the day and the traffic. David raced to her house and arrived there in just over twenty minutes.

When he attempted to enter the home David was stopped by a young attractive female police officer who asked him to identify himself.

Episode Four of The Pastor

“I’m David Noble, the pastor of New Beginnings Church. I’m Melissa’s husband and Dexter’s father.”

As soon as David could get these words out of his mouth he saw the police officer get jostled out of the way by a team of paramedics. A young athletic looking paramedic spoke up.

‘Where’s the victim?”

“She’s in the bedroom. I’ll take you there,” Dexter said.

When the paramedics entered Melissa’s bedroom they could see that Melissa had bled out from the deep and wide slash to her throat. Her clothing and the once grey rug were now saturated in blood. They tried to get a pulse but were unable to find one. Two of the paramedics took turns performing CPR on Melissa but she remained unresponsive.

The young paramedic asked Dexter to return to the living room. Dexter took a seat on the sofa next to his father.

“I’ve got some terrible news for both of you. Melissa is dead.”

Pastor Noble covered his face with his hands and began to weep. Even though he was sitting down he felt dizzy and disoriented. Who could do such a horrific thing to his wife? David couldn’t think of anyone who disliked Melissa.

The thought crossed his mind that this tragedy probably wouldn’t have happened had he and his wife still been living together. An almost tangible wave of guilt overcame David.

After he graduated from seminary David had mixed feelings about becoming a pastor. He had always been an intellectual, enjoyed studying The Bible and engaging in theological debates with his professors and fellow students. Still, David felt that something was missing. He knew about God but he doubted that he had a personal relationship with Him.

Just prior to graduating from seminary David married Melissa. Nine months later Dexter was born and David now had a family to support. Fortunately. David was very ambitious and charismatic and was offered a pastoral position in a Baptist church in an affluent suburb of Winnipeg just one month after his graduation.

Episode Five of The Pastor

One year earlier:

David arose at four o’clock in the morning after having another dark night of the soul. Lately he had been having too many of these. While working at his office at Brownstone Baptist Church, David was now experiencing panic attacks. He would begin to feel disoriented and become very agitated. He would pace the room walking back and forth like a caged hyena. Bill would perspire profusely and would have trouble catching his breath. He felt like was being tormented by demons.  Although he was alone in his office he would hear voices in his head. The voices would speak to him and say things like. “You’re a fake pastor David. You don’t really have a strong belief in God. Admit it David, you are really an agnostic. Your faith wavers from day to day and from hour to hour. If your congregation knew this they would fire you as their pastor and they’re beginning to get suspicious. You can see it in their faces when you are preaching your message on Sunday mornings. You should do the right thing. You should tell them the truth, spare yourself the humiliation and quit your job.”

David began to shout, “Shut up. That’s not true!”

Episode Six of the Pastor:

All David knew was that he had to get out of his office. He desperately needed to get away from the church and his family. David dashed out of his office with a look of pure terror on his face. His secretary, Julie, barely had time to say, “Pastor Noble, what’s wrong? Where are you going?”

David did not answer. He made a mad dash for his red 1999 Mercury Sable. The pastor started up the engine and was soon out of the church parking lot. He was now functioning on automatic pilot and took the fastest route to Pembina Highway. David was headed for the Canada/US border. The voices continued to mock David. “What are you going to do now David? Run away to the United States? Leave your job and desert your family? What kind of man are you David?”

David talked back angrily to the voices in his head, “Go to hell! You don’t know what you’re talking about. If you were under the same intolerable stress that I have to endure you’d crack up too.”pastor 4

Infinite Realities

Bill Hainsey was a few feet from the door to his apartment door. He was in a hurry to find his key as he could hear the phone in his apartment ringing. His son was probably calling him to see if his dad could take him to the next WWE live wrestling show. As Bill fumbled for his keys he was startled by an odd looking man that had come up behind him. The man looked very old with his long white hair and beard. He was very short and his face was deeply etched with the wrinkles left by a hard life and his clothes looked like they were obtained from the Salvation Army or a thrift store. Maybe this strange little man had found his wardrobe in a dumpster.

Bill turned towards the man and said,” Look old man. I’m kind of in a hurry. The phone is ringing in my apartment and I need to answer the call.”

I understand sir. This will only take a couple of seconds. I’m giving you a present, a new piece of technology that you will never wish to part with.”

Bill grabbed the object from the strange man’s hand and unlocked the door to his apartment.

fall-streamWhen he got inside his apartment his phone had stopped ringing. All his attention was now focused on what he was holding in his left hand. The object appeared to be an eight inch Android tablet that did not have any logo or brand name. The borders of the tablet were florescent and changed color every two seconds. The colors were bold and beautiful. Bill was sure that he did not recognize some of the colors. Bill watched in amazement when the borders of the tablet turned translucent. The touch screen contained many apps with icons preinstalled. Bill was startled when he heard his phone start to ring again. He stumbled over a pile of books on the orange, threadbare carpet as he attempted to find his red mobile phone on his old, well worn coffee table. The mobile phone was buried under a haphazard pile of magazines.

Ken David Stewart’s Greatest Hits (Volume 1 Excerpt 11)

The Cover Up
Chapter One
It was around 4:00 AM Sunday morning and Cora Sanchez, the night cleaner at the House of Hope has just completed her washing of the floors on the third floor of the building. She pushed open the door that leads to the stairwell and is immediately struck by the stench of urine and feces. This was not an unfamiliar smell to Cora as residents urinating or even defecating in inappropriate places was not unheard of in this facility. As she took a look around the curving stairwell she saw a pair of blue jean covered legs. The body that they belonged to was hidden by the curve in the stairwell between the third and fourth floors.
The House of Hope is a state of the art facility designed for the treatment of multiple mental and substance abuse disorders and the general conditions of abuse, homelessness and poverty. It was a recently built multi-complex facility that was funded by a large government grant.
Cora suspected that she would find a resident who had soiled himself before passing out in the stairwell. Although the facility’s policy was not to allow alcohol or illicit drugs in the residence, they could not prevent a client from obtaining their drug of choice from the street.
As the facility was located in an industrial warehouse district of town there were always drug dealers near the premises. Cora climbed down the flight of stairs until she was on the landing. She found a young man probably in his twenties passed out on the stairs. It was obvious that he had soiled himself. He was wearing a red hoodie with matching red sweat pants. His body appeared to be positioned in an unnatural position as if twisted the wrong way. Cora did not recognize the man. As the cleaner worked the overnight shift she didn’t get to know many of the residents of the treatment facility.
Cora asked the man in a loud voice if he was okay to see if he would respond. She waited about five seconds but did not hear any response from the man. Cora got down on her knees in order to give the gentleman a shake.
As she got close to his face she realized that the man was not breathing. There was a stream of saliva and red spittle coming from his mouth that had dried on his chin.
Becoming alarmed Cora ran out of the stairwell to get help.
As she opened the door to the stairs she saw a security guard doing his rounds. She called out that a man was down in the stairway. The security guard immediately called 911.

Chapter 8 of The Cover Up, A Novel

As soon as Detective Barnes left the RCW office Rick told the residents that were waiting for him to be patient and that he would talk to them in about five minutes. Rick needed some time to clear his head and to think about all the follow up that he would need to do. He would also need to figure out what he would need to say to the residents and his staff. For some reason Rick thought he should check if Bret had taken his bedtime medications before he left the treatment center. Rick thought to himself, “Of course he had, you were the one who gave him his meds when Bret returned to the facility at ten to twelve. You assumed that Bret had gone straight to bed after you gave him his bedtime medications.
As Rick had already opened up the locked medicine cabinet he figured that he may as well check Bret’s bubble pack of medications.
To his horror Rick noticed that he had inadvertently given Bret an extra dose of his pills. Rick had failed to see that Brad had already given Bret his bedtime meds at 9:00 PM. Brad had logged it in both the medication binder and the shift log book. As Rick was awoken from a deep sleep, he was not fully alert when he arrived at the center he just assumed that Bret had not taken his bedtime pills. The first thought to enter Rick’s mind was what effect would the extra dose of medications have had upon Bret? Would the medication error somehow have contributed to Bret’s death? Rick had extensive knowledge about psychiatric medications. He knew what they were supposed to do and what their side effects were. He noted that included in Brett’s bedtime bubble pack were the drugs, amitryptyline, zopiclone and seroquel. All three of these medications would have a sedating effect if taken in just the one prescribed dose. What would the result be if the dose were doubled? It occurred to Rick that such a heavy dose of meds could have caused Bret to fall down the stairs and perhaps break his neck.
Rick had to think fast. He was the one responsible for this medication error and he would have to think of a way to cover it up. Rick had a plan.

Episode 131 of The Lake Demon, A Novel

Episode 131:
After a hearty breakfast, Winston and his two young charges boarded Winston’s large white cabin cruiser.
“Wow, this boat is huge. You weren’t kidding Mr. Stanfield when you told us you had a large boat. It’s beautiful,” said Garry.
“Not Mr. Stanfield, Garry. Just call me Winston, please. Yes, it is an extremely large vessel but we’re searching for a very large creature, possibly fifty to sixty feet long,” said Winston.
“Do you really think we’ll see Ogopogo today, Gramps?” asked Wally.
“ It’s not likely, but who knows? At the very least we’ll have a very enjoyable boat ride. It’s such perfect weather to be out on the lake. These creatures don’t come up to the surface too often unless they spot some birds near the surface of the lake. Then it’s feeding time for these animals,” answered Winston.
“So the birds are prey for Ogopogo?”Wally inquired..
“Yes, Ogopogo feeds on birds and any fish that appeal to his taste buds, “answered Winston.
The boat was now moving at a slw, calm pace. and Garry couldn’t help taking in the beautiful scenery. They were presently passing through a part of Lake Okanagan that was populated with many cottages on the shore. Many tourists visited the lake on their holidays,
“Could we be prey for Ogopogo?” asked Garry when he had broken out of his reverie.
“It’s possible,” said Winston, “But only if the creature thinks we’re hunting him. “Fortunately there aren’t any reports of Ogopogo eating anyone but some people have claimed that they have been chased by the creature, There was a swimmer who was trainer for a marathon not too long ago. He told that media that he was certain that he was being closely followed by two animals that fit the description of Ogopogo. He said that he jumped in his rescue boat as soon as it passed by him. He told the press that he had never been more afraid in his life.”

Chapter 3 of The Pile Driver, A Novel

“I wonder what those two guys do for a living or if they even have jobs,” queried Mike.

“Beats me but they probably don’t sell cars or life insurance,” Matt responded.
“Those two guys are really making me curious,” said Mike. “What if we asked them what they do for a living after they’ve finished working out?”

“I just hope those two dudes are friendly,” laughed Matt.
After about one hour had passed both Mike and Matt and the two newcomers to the gym had finished their workouts. Mike and Matt figured now was their chance to satisfy their curiosity. When they got to the change room Mike was the first to approach the two new dudes. “Hey guys. My friend Matt and I are really impressed with how you guys worked out. You guys can lift so much weight we wondered what you guys do for a living.”

The dude with the blue hair looked at Mike and Matt and grinned. “You guys wouldn’t believe us if we told you.”

“Now you really got us curious,” said Matt.
It was now the guy with the orange hair with the pointed goatee’s turn to speak. “We’re professional wrestlers. We both wrestle for an independent wrestling promotion in town.”
“Yeah, we might be wrestling in this promotion for a month or two and then when the crowd gets tired of us we’ll move on to a different city or a different state,” said Blue Hair.
“Yep, that’s the life of professional wrestler,” added Orange Goatee.”
“You guys have some pretty good physiques,” said Blue Hair.
“Why don’t you drop by the wrestling school tomorrow afternoon? The owner, Al Sharp runs the wrestling school as well as serving as being our booker for the matches. We’ll introduce you to Al and you’ll get a better idea of what independent wrestling is all about.”

Mike looked at Matt. “I don’t have anything planned for tomorrow afternoon Why don’t we check it out?”

Mike and Matt finished their workout gym Mike gets a phone call from his girlfriend Courtney. “Mike, don’t forget our date tonight. We got a double date set up Ivor and Jessica at The Spider Club Lounge tonight.”
